Announcing MISSIO: Download this free mobile app for latest news about the Roman Catholic Church

The Pontifical Mission Societies in the United States, in an effort to offer Catholics a way of staying up-to-date on the latest Catholic news from the Vatican and around the world, recently unveiled a new mobile phone app called MISSIO.   With daily news reports and videos, including news about the church’s missions in the world, users will find out about happenings of the global Catholic Church, anywhere, anytime.

MISSIO may be downloaded to smartphones for FREE wherever apps are available and is supported by both Apple and Android devices.  This new media initiative is a way to “put the missionary Gospel in the pockets of millions of people, young and old, rich and poor, believer and searcher” and will also be a “way to connect as the one Body of Christ,” said Father Andrew Small, OMI, National Director of the Pontifical Mission Societies in the United States.

This new app was “unlocked” by Pope Francis just before Pentecost at the conclusion of the General Assembly for the National Directors of the Pontifical Mission Societies in Rome.  Using an iPad presented by Fr. Small, the Pope Francis activated the app by pushing a button marked “evangelizantur,” Latin for “they have been evangelized.”  Users who had previously downloaded the app received a push notification that the app was now active.  “What a great use of the Keys of St. Peter!” noted Fr. Small.

Information and video sources for this new app are FIDES, the international news agency of the Pontifical Mission Societies, the Vatican’s own news site,, and the Catholic News Service.  The app is intended to encourage personal reflection and prayer, and also provides an opportunity for mission support.  Fr. Small also noted that “with mission stories available in eight languages – English, Spanish, Italian, German, French, Portuguese, Chinese and Arabic – the App fit very well with the Church’s celebration of Pentecost, when the disciples began preaching the Good News in all tongues and dialects.”  The app will appear in the default language set on the mobile device.

The Pontifical Mission Societies are the Holy Father’s principal means of support for the approximately 1,150 mission dioceses throughout the world.  Reminding the faithful of their Baptismal call to mission, the Pontifical Mission Societies operates some 9,000 clinics caring for the sick and dying, 10,000 orphanages providing a place of safety and shelter, and 1,200 schools educating children in some of the poorest parts of our world.  It also helps to train seminarians, religious, and catechists from these mission dioceses.
