Parish History

Immaculate Conception-St. Joseph was established on September 8, 2001.  The parish was created by merging Immaculate Conception and St. Joseph's parishes due to the drop in population of the city.  Both churches remained open to serve the new parish.  However, the life of this parish would turn out to be brief.

After a few years, a study was conducted involving local church leadership, parishioners, diocesan officials and consultative bodies to determine how many parishes would be viable in the Bloomfield, Garfield, Lawrenceville and Polish Hill areas of the city.  As a result of the study, Immaculate Conception-St. Joseph Parish merged with St. Lawrence O'Toole Parish to form the new St. Maria Goretti Parish.  The merger became effective on June 4, 2012.  Both churches of the former Immaculate Conception-St. Joseph Parish remain open and will serve the new parish.
