Welcome to the Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh!
Founded August 11, 1843, we are a community of 628,000 Catholics who live in the southwest corner of Pennsylvania: Allegheny, Beaver, Butler, Greene Lawrence and Washington counties. Our mission is to help everyone learn Jesus, love Jesus and live Jesus. We invite you to join us by visiting a parish near you.
St. Paul Cathedral is the Mother Church of the Diocese of Pittsburgh, and the site of major events, including ordinations to the priesthood and diaconate, the Golden Wedding anniversary celebration, and the annual Easter blessing for families. The cathedral stands in the city's cultural hub of Oakland, which is a vibrant neighborhood full of universities, medical centers, homes, restaurants, and shops. The Cathedral worship community is large and diverse, and many college students and young adults serve in parish ministries.
You can watch 8:15 a.m. weekday Masses at the Cathedral here.
We are On Mission for The Church Alive! which is a planning initiative involving all the clergy, religious and laity of the Diocese of Pittsburgh. Our goal is to make our parishes, and every aspect of the life of the Church even more vibrant in worship and service.
In 2015, we began studying the Catholic population, clergy statistics, sacramental trends, and finances by parish. We used that information to group parishes together in geographic areas. People have been working together to strengthen relationships between parishes, cultivate greater ministry and foster mission in their communities. As of January 1, 2024, there are 60 parishes in the Diocese of Pittsburgh.
We are passionate about supporting quality, sustainable Catholic education where students come to understand that God is present and active in their lives. Through being in a learning environment where they see the signs of God's love around them, they understand how they can become instruments of His grace in our world.
The Diocese of Pittsburgh is in the process of reorganizing its grade schools by regions and is proud to be home to a variety of choices for Catholic education from pre-school through college, as well as seminary studies. Find out more about how our Catholic schools are Lighting the Way!
