Oakland Catholic High School is a Christ-centered, college preparatory school for young women of diverse backgrounds. Position Overview
The Athletic Director is responsible for the overall management of the Athletic Department, including supervision of coaches; scheduling of fields and competitions; day-to-day operations of all programs; creation and implementation of programs and projects that strategically engage the student-athletes; maintenance of a healthy competitive environment; and support of the broader mission of Oakland Catholic High School. It is incumbent on the Athletic Director to establish clear processes; systems of organization; and effective and appropriate communication chains that connect student-athletes, coaches, parents/guardians, and administration. It is the responsibility of the A.D. to establish an effective and cohesive Athletic Association. In short, the ideal candidate is a strong leader committed to both the value of a strong athletic program and the transformational impact that an all-girls Catholic educational and athletic experience can have on young women of today, with the ultimate objective of making the Oakland Catholic athletic program a Center of Excellence for the school. The Athletic Director works with the Assistant A.D. and must be capable of leading, mentoring, guiding, and delegating tasks. With the Assistant A.D., the Athletic Director coordinates and implements all interscholastic athletic programs, builds relationships with coaches and other A.D.’s in the region, and serves as a professional role model of good sportsmanship for both student-athletes and parents. The Athletic Director of Oakland Catholic recognizes and supports the strong academic reputation of the school, ensuring that all athletes and the overall athletic program prioritizes academic success. Reports Directly to the Principal, but works regularly with Assistant Principal on operational matters and the President on major gift solicitation and PR matters as needed.
Status: Full-time, exempt. Year-round; salaried.
Position Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in sports management, physical education, education, or related field.
Experience in high school or college athletics as a coach, manager, administrator, and/or leader.
Clear understanding of the expectations of the position and demonstrated ability to work within a Catholic school in the Diocese of Pittsburgh, with an appreciation and understanding of the philosophy and advantages of the all-girls, college preparatory educational experience.
Evidence that the individual is a self-starter/self-motivated, well organized, detail-oriented.
Effective interpersonal and communication skills across different age groups and social/professional situations, with the ability to represent Oakland Catholic with the highest degree of professionalism.
Ability to work independently and fulfill responsibilities in a competent and timely manner with minimal supervision.
Ability to manage a variety of activities and calendars in the coordination and execution of numerous programs and events conducted through the athletic program.
Facility with computer applications, electronic newsletters, databases, email, and other technology as modes of communication, promotion, and building of the program.
Flexibility of schedule with regard to evening and weekend responsibilities, as well as the need to travel at times.
A genuine willingness to grow within the role and actively pursue professional growth opportunities and ways to enhance the athletic program at Oakland Catholic High School.
Responsibilities
Supervise coaching staff from hiring, to onboarding, to pre/post-season reviews, to dismissal, with counsel and input from school administration.
Assure that the program, coaches, and athletes adhere to all WPIAL, PIAA, and Oakland Catholic regulations and policies. Attend WPIAL/PIAA meetings as required.
Maintain accurate records of demonstration of above adherence including medical clearances, permission forms, academic/discipline eligibility, and signed Code of Conduct forms from both student-athletes and parents, with Assistant A.D.
Work with coaches, the NCAA, the OC College Counseling Center, and the student-athletes on college recruitment, signings, and acceptances. Coordinate signings for each season as needed, in conjunction with the Assistant A.D., the administration, the Social Media & Marketing Specialist, and the school photographer.
Schedules all practices and competitions with coaches and Assistant A.D., securing fields as necessary and verifying there are no conflicts with other school events held on campus.
Secure field and pool permits as necessary and well in advance of each season.
Secure officials and provide supervision for all home competitions with the Assistant A.D.
Maintain, track, and organize equipment and uniform inventory with the Assistant A.D.; create a schedule for ordering new supplies, that aligns with the annual athletic budget.
Make arrangements with the Assistant A.D. to hold three athletic banquets (Fall, Winter, Spring) that recognize the contributions and achievements of athletes, coaches, and others to the OC Athletic Department and their teams. Maintain accurate records on the eligibility and criteria met of those who letter in a sport.
Coordinate and budget the transportation for all athletic programs with the Assistant A.D.
Work with the Oakland Catholic Business Office to develop the annual budget for the athletic program.
Manage rental of Oakland Catholic athletic facilities with counsel from administration.
Oversee and update the athletic pages of the website and the annual publication of the Coach, Student, and Parent athletic handbooks that convey policies, protocols, eligibility requirements, expectations, codes of conduct, and other details pertinent to the athletic department.
Communicate scores major successes, and other athletic achievements to the Social Media & Digital Marketing Specialist, as well as to local media. *PR matters or outreach from the media on matters other than the above must be directed to administration, according to diocesan policy.
Respond to all parent and coaching staff concerns, calls, and emails in a timely and appropriate fashion. Communicate major issues immediately to the principal and assistant principal.
Serve as liaison between current booster groups, coaches, and school administration.
Establish an overarching Athletic Association to replace the current booster group system.
Participate in all-school fundraising efforts and engage the parents and athletes to do the same.
Integrate the mission and identity of Oakland Catholic High School into the athletic program via support and promotion of Spirituality, Scholarship, and Service in various ways.
Be a support network for girls in this region via coordination of summer workshops and camps open to all middle school and younger students across multiple sports, providing volunteer opportunities for current OC Eagles.
Working Conditions
Position is a full time, year-round position at Oakland Catholic High School that will require evening and weekend duties for competitions and events. Some travel may be necessary.
Office space provided, with equipment needed to perform job. School-owned laptop also provided for work purposes.
Adjusted daily work hours that take into consideration the A.D.’s responsibilities for and presence at evening and weekend competitions and events. Work hours will be determined according to needs, recommendations, and arrangements made and agreed upon by the principal.
