Under the supervision of the Food Service Management Team, the Cook assists in preparing, seasoning, and cooking a wide variety of meats, vegetables, soups, breakfast dishes, and other food items in large quantities. Assists in supporting other employees performing the same or related work.
The Cook will carry out duties in keeping with the mission of Little Sisters of the Poor, namely the caring for the aged poor with love, respect, and dignity. “Making the elderly happy, that is what counts” was a saying of the Little Sisters of the Poor foundress Saint Jeanne Jugan. Central to this philosophy is the promotion of a holistic approach for our Residents in an atmosphere of kindness and respect in creating a family spirit.
This position, located in Pittsburgh, includes all shifts including holidays and weekends.
The Cook will:
Prepare and cook family style meals for the residents and Sisters.
Cook in quantities according to menu and number of people to be served.
Follow state and federal regulations as outlined in the Home’s policies and procedures for Dietary Service, infection control, equipment usage, food storage, food distribution and food service under sanitary conditions.
Be required to understand essential components of therapeutic diets related to setting the table with condiments (seasonings, beverage, and dairy products) and assisting in meal service when needed.
Maintain confidentiality of all Resident, departmental and organizational information including personal healthcare information.
Work effectively and cooperatively as a team member within Department and with all departments or other disciplines.
The Cook must have:
High school education or equivalent; educational courses in food management and production.
Comprehensive knowledge of cooking for large groups.
Two years minimum institutional cooking experience or equivalent specialized training, and knowledge of meat cutting.
Excellent Resident/Customer service skills.
A willingness to learn and follow directions.
The ability to read, understand, and explain dietary restrictions, alternates, and substitutes.
Excellent time management skills.
Have some knowledge of food preparation and general kitchen operations.
