The Purpose of VM Missionary:
To introduce inner-city youth to Jesus Christ and his Church through evangelization, outreach, and community building. The VM Missionary life is at its core,relational,as it is friendship and discipleship that are the primary conduits of the work of the Holy Spirit in the lives of the inner-city youth whom Vagabond Missions is privileged to serve.
The Primary Task:
This Vagabond Missions approach is based on the understanding that the primary task of youth ministry is to:
-Love and serve youth where they are in life.
-Encourage youth in developing their relationship to God.
-Provide them with opportunities for nurture and growth.
-Invite young people in the sacramental life of the Catholic Church.
Responsibilities:
1. Attendance at the following meetings is expected: Weekly Staff Meetings, Outreach Nights, Bible Study/ Worship, Core Team Meetings, and Committee Meetings. 2. Daily Outreach in the city. (schools, parks, etc) 3. Disciple 3-5 young people in ongoing formation. 4. Aid in basic planning of events, errands, and transportation needs. 5. Work in concert with the gifts and talents of other staff members and maintain a teamwork mentality. 6. Fundraising.
Organizational Relationship and Supervision:
Missionaries report directly to team leaders for ministry guidance as well as mission Area Directors as their primary supervisors. Missionaries are stationed at any one of Vagabond Missions’ eight area locations throughout the United States for a minimum, year-long commitment: Pittsburgh (PA), Steubenville (OH), Philadelphia (PA), Greenville (NC), Mobile (AL), Oklahoma City (OK), Wichita (KS), Indianapolis (IN), and Baton Rouge (LA). Final decisions regarding the stationing of missionaries involves discernment of both the preferences of the missionary as well as the ministry needs of Vagabond Missions at the time.
Qualifications and Aptitudes:
1.Must embrace personal goals of Christian, disciplined living, the pursuit of virtue, and assent to the dogmatic and moral teachings of the Catholic Church. 2. A bachelor’s degree in a related field is highly preferred, but not required. 3. Must have both a good work ethic as well as the versatility to work with shifting schedules as well as changing goals and duties. 4. Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills, and conflict management skills. 5. Must possess a proven ability to work effectively with youth, diverse individuals, and teams of volunteers. Job Status Details: Position is full-time (40 hours per week), Salaried (provided through personal support raising).
