Saint Gregory Catholic Elementary School (Zelienople) will conduct virtual learning this week, after the principal was informed that seven staff members have tested positive for COVID-19.
In a letter to parents, principal Erin Rice said, “Although we seemed to have conquered the odds and provided in-person learning for over a year and a half through this pandemic, I am afraid that we are not invincible and COVID has finally forced me to make some difficult decisions.” Rice said she attempted to find substitute teachers but was not able to secure enough teachers to cover the critical need.
Students will pick up school materials Monday, January 3, and classes will be virtual from Tuesday, January 4 through Friday, January 7, 2022.
“I recognize the hardships this will cause for some of our families. However, I believe that it is the right step to take for the health and safety of our families, employees, and the community at large. Thank you for your continued patience and support during this evolving situation. Please pray for health and well-being so we can get back together next week,” Rice said.
“We expect that this month is going to require a great deal of flexibility on the part of everyone,” said Michelle Peduto, director of Diocese of Pittsburgh Catholic Schools. “We are in continued consultation with local physicians and health agencies. Our goal remains to provide in-person instruction. As always, we are grateful for the patience and support of our school families as we work through these community challenges to provide for the students.”
