Bishop David Zubik is encouraging Catholics to join people from many other traditions in “Amen to Action” on the day after Thanksgiving, when 2,500 volunteers at the David Lawrence Convention Center will pack 1 million boxes of food for hungry people in Southwestern Pennsylvania..
“Jesus fed the 5,000 when they were hungry. As Christians coming together from the Orthodox, Catholic and Protestant traditions, we want to follow in His footsteps and feed those in need,” Bishop Zubik said. “We want to demonstrate our gratitude for God’s blessings by showing that our love for Jesus and for one another is greater than anything that we disagree over.”
The event will begin in music and prayer at 8:30 a.m., and packing will start at 10:30 a.m. The packed meals will go to food banks throughout the greater Pittsburgh region.
Amen to Action grew out of a prayer movement among local Catholic, Orthodox and Protestant clergy and lay leaders that Bishop Zubik has convened several times over the past two years. Crucial lay leadership has been provided by Reid Carpenter, president emeritus of the Pittsburgh Leadership Foundation.
