Bishop David Zubik will celebrate the priestly ordination of Deacon David Schmidt at St. Paul Cathedral, Fifth Avenue at North Craig St, Oakland, on June 25 at 10 am.
“I am in awe and wonder of what God has in store for me in the priesthood . . . in this beautiful ministry of the church. I ask your prayers for me in my ordination and please know I am praying for you,” Deacon Schmidt said.
He is the son of Kimberly and David Schmidt, Sr. and his home parish was Saint Fidelis of Sigmaringen in Butler County, now part of All Saints parish, combining five Butler parishes. He attended Butler Catholic Elementary School before graduating from Butler Area High School in 2009.
Schmidt graduated from California University of Pennsylvania in 2012 with a Bachelor of Science in Sports Management. In 2014, he received a Master’s in Sports Management from Old Dominion University.
In the fall of 2015, Schmidt entered the priestly formation program, and completed two years of pre-theology studies at Saint Paul Seminary and Duquesne University.
He was assigned in 2017 to Theological College and The Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C. to begin theological studies.
In the summer of 2018, Schmidt participated in the seminarian program of the Institute for Priestly Formation at the University of Creighton in Omaha, Nebraska.
Following his second year of theology he was assigned to the parishes of Saint Frances Cabrini, Center; Saint John the Baptist, Monaca; Our Lady of Fatima, Hopewell; and Saint Titus, Aliquippa for his pastoral year assignment (now combined in Mary Queen of Saints parish).
Schmidt was ordained a transitional deacon on June 12, 2021 and assigned again to Mary, Queen of Saints Parish on July 1, 2021. In the fall of 2021, he returned to Theological College to begin his final year of theological studies.
