Bishop David Zubik is scheduled for a spinal surgery Monday, August 22 at UPMC Mercy Hospital in Uptown.
The surgery is expected to last several hours and is intended to address continuing problems with collapsing discs. Following his surgery, the Bishop will require an extended time of recovery, which will keep him from public appearances in the short term. He will still be able to conduct the business of the diocese from his office at the Diocesan Pastoral Center.
“My walking has become increasingly more labored,” Bishop Zubik said. “At the Easter Vigil in Saint Paul Cathedral, I had a very unfortunate fall caused by chronic weakness in my right leg.”
Working with his physicians and with follow-up testing, it was determined that corrective measures were warranted.
The Bishop has a history of back problems. This will be his fifth back surgery. He has done well with recovery from each one.
The upcoming surgery is considered common and is known to have good results.
Bishop Zubik has been doing well in his recovery from surgery in February that repaired a significant tear in his left shoulder and biceps. This surgery is not expected to have any negative impact on that recovery.
“Please remember me in your prayers, and especially my surgeon and all those who will be assisting him. I am looking forward to successful results so that I can be more steady on my feet in my service to all of our faithful,” Bishop Zubik said.
An update will be provided when the surgery is complete.
