Saint Augustine Friary, Lawrenceville, seeks to hire a responsible and compassionate Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) to provide overnight supervision and assistance for elderly and disabled friars (priests and brothers) nights – Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday and possibly Monday from 10pm – 6am. For information, please call Brother Jim Mungovan at (412) 682-6430. CNA Job Title Description
Assist with completion of Activities of Daily Living (ADLs), including bathing, showering, oral hygiene, general appearance, help with meals (plating food for those incapable), maintenance of hearing aids (changing batteries and keeping clean), shaving, applying eye drops, administer medications (already dispensed and prepared), assist with transporting residents to the chapel and dining room.
Also includes ADLs to maintain “ward order”, neatness of individual rooms, and surrounding environment. Changing of bed linens and making beds for those unable to do so, is also essential. Remove safety hazards to avoid falls and injury such as power cords, furniture, walkers, end tables, etc. Maintain room supplies such as paper towels, soap, absorbent underwear, etc. Mop floors and take out trash as needed. Do laundry for those not able, report when personal items and medications are low.
Must have realization that many residents have memory issues of variable levels, and may require re-orientation to place, time, and date, and year. Several residents also have different levels of dementia, including Alzheimer’s. “Playing along” with a person’s confusion to end the conversation, so you can move on to your next task, does not always placate them, is not fair to them, and can tend to only add to their confusion. If they disagree, it is not acceptable to argue with the patient, but simply repeat the actual information, once or twice.
Always maintain a patient, charitable, and respectful demeanor, and refrain from displays of frustration, and anger.
Engage in conversation with residents, accompany them for walks, and pushing a wheelchair may be required. Supervise and assist with exercising as needed.
Occasionally take a resident to appointments (doctor, dentist, eye -doctor etc.), or going to drug store for supplies (not a requirement).
Maintain a “teamwork approach” with other staff and realize that the atmosphere at St. Augustine Friary is one of mutual support, patience, and understanding.
Be mindful of resident’s health concerns and report any abnormalities or strange behavior to the nurse and or Guardian.
