As the holiest – and historically most crowded – days of the Christian year approach amid the COVID pandemic, the Diocese of Pittsburgh is urging parishioners to check with parishes about procedures for attending Holy Week services.
Due to social distancing to prevent the spread of COVID, many parishes require advance sign-ups to attend Mass. Others have established overflow areas in their parking lots – where the Mass may be heard over car radio – or in their social halls.
“Easter is the most important day on the Christian calendar. We rejoice in celebrating Easter and the events which led up to it,” Bishop David Zubik said. “As we seek to love our neighbors by stopping the spread of the coronavirus, we have adopted measures that continue to provide for health and safety protocols. I am grateful to our pastors and their clergy teams and staffs, who have been working creatively to offer options that allow as many as possible to participate.”
Some parishes have added new Masses to their schedules for this week. Catholics who are unfamiliar with the COVID measures at their parish are urged to
check the parish website to find the opportunities and procedures for attending Mass during COVID.
“I’m asking the faithful to please make sure they are informed about the procedures at their parishes so as to respect the necessary precautions brought on by COVID. Please know that every effort is being made to welcome everyone to worship together during this sacred week.”
Masks and social distancing are required on parish property at all times. The worship space and church facilities are thoroughly sanitized between Masses. Many parishes also stream Mass; some carry it over the radio.
A year ago, the bishops of the dioceses in Pennsylvania lifted the obligation to attend Mass. That provision continues until further notice. If someone feels ill, has compromised health, or is fearful of going out, they are encouraged and welcomed to watch livestreamed and televised Masses. Bishop Zubik’s schedule is available at the diocesan website
