Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish, Glenshaw PA, is looking to hire a full time Director of Youth and Young Adult Ministry
JOB SUMMARY:
Youth: The Youth Minister will perform a wide variety of activities to direct and coordinate a strong faith filled youth ministry aimed at helping youth grow as disciples of Jesus Christ. The mission of the youth minister will be directed towards youth grades 6-12. This person is to have purposeful engagement in relational ministry with youth and parents, provide for catechesis, and invite youth to serve others and make disciples. To that end the youth minister is responsible for the development, coordination, supervision and execution of parish programs designed to engage the youth of the parish. He or she should develop close communication with, and mutual support from families of youth. We are looking for that unique individual who has the spirit and heart for ministry as well as the ability to organize and run a comprehensive, fun, engaging ministry.
Young Adults: The youth minister will also serve as a liaison and presence to the young adult community by providing support, resources, and a prayerful presence to this ministry.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
While not intended to be a complete list, the following are examples of duties associated with this position. Other related expectations, responsibilities, and tasks are required at times. The Youth Minister should be adaptive and receptive to the varying requirements of this position. The Director of Youth and Young Adult Ministry will report directly to the Director of Evangelization.
Lead • Coordinate the recruitment, training, support and evaluation of volunteers in the youth ministry program and provide appropriate training for the youth and adults in leadership positions. • Lead the core team(s) and catechists in planning and coordinating programs and service
Provide support to young adult leadership.
Collaborate with the Director of Religious Education and School Principal, Pastoral Associate and Outreach Coordinator
Evangelization/Catechesis • Participate in ongoing formation and maintain a personal commitment to holiness being sure to frequent the sacraments and seek Christ in daily prayer. The youth minister should attend at least one retreat per year and regular spiritual direction. • Develop vibrant and orthodox programming that will lead middle school and high school students into a deeper relationship with Jesus. To the end of leading youth to Christ this programming should build a vibrant youth community at Our Lady of Perpetual Help. Examples include but are not limited to the following: o High-school and Middle-School faith formation o Weekly discipleship group for high school youth. o Regular social events for middle and high school youth. o High-school Retreats and mission trips, Confirmation preparation program and retreat o Youth Masses led by youth and in collaboration with the Pastor and Liturgy Committee. o Works of Mercy: regular service projects, mission trips, The March For Life Etc. • Participate in the life and activities of the parish and develop opportunities for youth to be visibly present and involved with the larger parish community. • Have an active presence in local schools, build relationships with teens, and encourage them in their faith. • Provide connection through relational ministry between youth and the Church.
Develop and foster a culture among the teens that is focused on evangelization and discipleship.
Actively involve youth in the liturgy ministries such as altar serving.
• Provide opportunities for youth to hear and respond to the Gospel message and to spread the good news. (community building activities, service opportunities, retreats, conferences,, etc.) • Plan events and activities specifically designed to recruit new students-both inside and outside the parish-into the program.
Ensure that young adult programming is orthodox, prayerful, and focused on building relationship with Christ.
Advocate • Represent the needs of youth and young adults to the pastor and the community. • Facilitate the development of community among young people, their families, their parish and the local community. • Support families in their roles as the primary catechists. Establish proactive processes to ensure the safety of all youth and that all Diocese of Pittsburgh guidelines for protection and safety of youth are followed,• Establish proactive processes to ensure the safety of all youth and that all Diocese of Richmond guidelines for protection and safety of youth are followed.
Serve as the liaison with the diocesan office of youth ministry and their programs, services, and resources.
Administrator
Facilitate the planning, implementation and evaluation of Youth Ministry mission and vision.
Supervise the activities and schedules of Youth Ministry volunteers and employees.
• Develop and monitor a youth and young adult budget in collaboration with the Finance Council. • Effectively and creatively provide communication to teens, the parish, and community regarding activities and events through the use of church bulletin, announcements and technology.
Develop and maintain records and database(s) of information pertinent to Youth Ministry such as membership lists, resource materials, event information, budget, program income/expense, etc.
General • Actively participate at parish staff meetings and events, Safeguard the Children Committee meetings, Diocesan gatherings and related activities.
• Collaborate with Diocesan Office of Youth Ministry to provide quality programming, training, and opportunities. • Ensure parish property is respected and appropriately used.
Serve as a staff Liturgy Coordinator.
Adhere to the policies and guidelines of the Diocesan employee handbook.
• Collaboratively work with Pastor, Director of Evangelization and Parish leadership by: o Attending regular staff meetings. o Attending Pastoral Council meetings and providing Youth ministry reports. o Participating in staff planning. o Communicating about youth ministry activities. o Seeking input in planning youth ministry activities. • Chair and lead the Youth Ministry committee, which is a committee created by and reporting to the Parish Council to provide vision, direction, support, and advocacy for the youth ministry within the Parish. • Collaborate with the Liturgy CommitteeDirector of Music when youth masses are scheduled. • Prepare and adhere to an annual budget for the youth ministry. • Submit formal long range plans and set goals for youth ministry programs to the Pastor to be reviewed and evaluated annually.
Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
POSITION SPECIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS: • Skills, Knowledge and/or Abilities • Strong personal relationship with Jesus and a deep love for the Catholic church; must be a practicing Catholic. • Passion for evangelizing and discipling middle and high school-aged students. • A joyful, authentic, charitable, prayerful and courageous presence. • Thrives in team environments and has ability to work collaboratively • Effective organizer, planner, and implementer • Mission driven • Working knowledge of social media platforms • Past experience with youth ministry and/or Life Teen-Edge programs is a plus. • Ability to pass a criminal background check. • Ability to make a solid connection with the youth and parents of OLOPH • A reliable and respectful commitment to the parish. • Education, Training and/or Experience o BA in Theology/Religious Education or a related educational field and/or a certificate in ministry or theology from a Catholic institution of higher learning is preferred. o Past experience with youth ministry and/or Life Teen-Edge programs is preferred. o Proven participation and continuing updating of the VIRTUS Safe Environment Program sponsored through the diocese. o Strong verbal and written communication skills; proficient in composing reports, correspondence and in publishing e-newsletters and flyers in English. o Ability to read, prepare, and manage budgets for major events and programs. o Proficiency in Word, Excel, and Microsoft Office; Technological proficiency in email and text communication, web, Facebook, etc. o Has knowledge of current youth culture and current trends and issues within those cultures.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT
This position entails frequent evening and weekend work.
