Father Lawrence DiNardo, Vicar General – General Secretary for the Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh, has been named a Chaplain to His Holiness by Pope Francis. With this honor, Father DiNardo receives the title of monsignor.
In requesting this honor, Bishop David Zubik noted how Monsignor DiNardo has faithfully served the Church of Pittsburgh for more than 44 years in diocesan administration, with almost 30 years of that time also serving as a pastor of two parishes.
“On many occasions I have said that Father Larry is truly ‘my right hand’, as he shoulders many responsibilities in the diocese in my name,” Bishop Zubik said. “Over the course of his years of service to the Diocese of Pittsburgh, Monsignor DiNardo has used his canonical background to advise four bishops of the diocese, including myself. Please join me in celebrating with Monsignor DiNardo as we thank him for his faithful service to God and the Church.”
Born and raised in West Aliquippa, Beaver County, Monsignor DiNardo is a graduate of Saint Veronica High School.
He has held offices in the Canon Law Society of America, including the office of President. Members also voted to recognize him as an outstanding canonist, with the Role of Law award.
Within the diocese, Monsignor DiNardo has served in the tribunal, as the Chancellor, and as the Vicar for Canonical Services. He was involved in helping to guide two parish reorganization and revitalization processes in the diocese, as well as the regionalization of Catholic schools. He also served as a co-chair of the 2000 Diocesan Synod.
“I accept the honor humbly, not simply for myself but for all the priests of the Diocese of Pittsburgh, for their daily service to the faithful – those working now, and those who have gone before us, marked with a sign of faith,” Monsignor DiNardo said.
