Judge vacates priest’s conviction, calls for new trial

Judge Anthony Mariani has vacated the conviction and sentencing of Father Hugh Lang and determined that Father Lang is entitled to a new trial. Father Lang had been convicted of one felony and five misdemeanors in a November trial. Father Lang has maintained his innocence and was exercising his right to appeal when his conviction and sentence was vacated on the basis that due process had been violated in the initial trial. Fr. Lang remains on administrative leave.
 
“The Church recognizes the decision of the court, and will wait until all court proceedings are completed before moving forward in its canonical process. We continue to pray for all involved,” Bishop David Zubik said.
