On Light Up Night, November 17, 2017, the Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh will do its fifth annual outreach in Downtown Pittsburgh to people interested in connecting or reconnecting with the Catholic faith.
The diocese will sponsor a booth at the NRG Santa Spectacular in Point State Park from 5-8:30 p.m. Bishop David A. Zubik will be there to greet people during at least part of the event, and a life-sized cut out of Pope Francis will be available for photos throughout the evening. A priest will be present to answer people’s questions about the Catholic faith or their relationship to the Catholic Church. Volunteers will give away rosaries and hand warmers.
Also, from 6-9 p.m. that evening, a Light-Up Night of Worship will take place in St. Mary of Mercy Church, at the corner of Stanwix Street and Third Avenue, across from PPG Wintergarden. There will be prayer and music and free hot chocolate.
The Light Up Night outreach began in 2013 as a way to promote The Light is On for You, one evening during Advent and Lent when every parish in the Diocese of Pittsburgh is open for the Sacrament of Confession. The upcoming Light is On for You will occur on Wednesday, December 13, from 6-9 p.m.
From November 17 to December 13 the Diocese of Pittsburgh will conduct an ad campaign for The Light is On for You, using radio, social media and some Downtown bus shelters. The marketing campaign includes stories about why people stop going to Confession but later return to the practice. A priest’s perspective on the sacrament is included in the social media and bus shelter ads.
