This action comes after positive COVID-19 tests. Teams will participate in remote learning.
The junior varsity and varsity girls’ basketball teams at two high schools in the Diocese of Pittsburgh will move to remote learning due to positive cases of COVID-19 from individuals associated with the teams. The situations at the schools are separate, unrelated, and not linked to any school-sponsored activities.
Saint Joseph High School (Natrona Heights, PA) received a report of one positive test. Members of the basketball team will participate in remote learning through January 19, 2021. All students have been learning remotely this week. In-person learning for the rest of the student body will resume as scheduled on Monday, January 11, 2021.
Seton LaSalle High School (Mount Lebanon, PA) received reports of five positive tests, three of which are from people associated with their junior varsity and varsity girls’ basketball teams. The teams will participate in remote learning through January 19, 2021. Following safety guidelines set forth by the Pennsylvania Department of Health and the Pennsylvania Department of Education, Seton LaSalle will be closed to in-person learning tomorrow, January 8, 2021, for deep cleaning, and will reopen Monday, January 11, 2021.
Both high schools have been following all Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Pennsylvania Department of Health COVID safety protocols. In collaboration with health officials, school administrators will continue to monitor the situations and update the teams and school families.
Both schools’ girl basketball practices and games for both schools are suspended until January 19 and are expected to resume on January 20, 2021.
“All our students have been in remote learning this week to allow some distance between the holidays and in-person classes. Our athletic teams resumed practices this week, and unfortunately, we have our first COVID case. We will continue to take precautions as the health and safety of our students and staff continues to be our greatest priority,” said Kimberly Minick, St. Joseph assistant principal.
"On the heels of finishing a successful first semester of 5-day, in-person learning, we continue to work to ensure the safety of our students and staff and maintain in-person learning for our school families," said Seton LaSalle principal Lauren Martin.
