May 1 was supposed to be Senior Prom Day for Serra Catholic High School in McKeesport. Even though it had to be cancelled, the administration and faculty was determined to make it a special day.
Teachers jumped in their cars and delivered personalized yard signs to all 78 graduating seniors to express their love and appreciation to the Class of 2020. It was an example of the teamwork everyone has demonstrated since the pandemic hit in mid-March, requiring classes to be held remotely.
“Our students, faculty and parents have risen to the challenge,” said principal Tim Chirdon.
Art teacher Heather Momich helped to organize today’s event, which saw teachers fanning out across 22 school districts to drive to students’ homes.
“It’s worth it for the kids, to bring a smile to their faces,” she said.
Senior Rebecca Sullivan of North Versailles knew that teachers were stopping by her house today, but she didn’t expect so many to arrive, carrying signs and honking horns.
“It’s been hard staying at home, thinking about all the memories we can’t make, but we’ve been trying to make the best of the situation,” she said.
Vice president of the school service club and a member of the swim team, Rebecca didn’t get to enjoy many senior traditions. Their Baccalaureate Mass and commencement have been postponed to June or perhaps August. But she has perspective.
“Today helps make this year special,” she said. “It’s quite amazing what they did.”
