The loss of a courageous and committed public servant such as Officer Sean Sluganski breaks our hearts and weakens the whole community. As a participant in Officer Sean’s funeral, I was inspired by his mom and family and moved by the dedication of his sister and brother officers. As we continue to pray for his family and his fellow officers, we must work for a society in which those who are mentally ill, including veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress, receive the help they need. Let us do all in our power to create a world in which guns cannot be readily used in anger, where there is compassion for all who suffer, and where there is mutual respect between our police and the communities they serve.
